Nicholson made a comment at the season ticket holders meeting about Rieder. Something along the lines that if he scored 15 goals this year we'd likely be a playoff team.

The really frustrating thing here, though, is how it so clearly indicates that the organization is completely lost. Year after year, it comes down to blame the players. No, not the general manager who put the flawed roster together or the guy at the top who hired that general manager and gave him the green light to make terrible decisions, but the marginal depth players. Man, if this place wasn’t already a tough sell for potential free agents, this comment certainly cemented it.

We’re supposed to trust this guy to lead the ship? This is who’s selecting the next general manager? This is who’s going to surround that general manager with the best staff possible to drag the Oilers out of the mess his last hire created? This is supposed to invoke enough faith in season ticket holders to shell out tens of thousands of dollars to support the Oilers?

Rieder is probably gonna be in the dumps now. I bet he doesn't score another goal the rest of this season thanks to Bobby Burgers and his big mouth.

Seriously embarrassing. This is like the President of company standing up and saying, "look, I know we've been really garbage for over a decade, but if Greg in accounting had not let us down, we would have had a really successful year. Also, Greg, you're fired.".

They can't really believe they were 10-12 goals away from making the playoffs right? They're currently on pace to finish -43 in goal differential. Like nobody that works professionally in any sort of capacity for an NHL team thinks that a team that is -30 in goal differential is a playoff contender, right? Right?

I think Bobby Burgers is actually kind of an a-hole. It's just straight up scapegoating. Seems to be a reflex for him because he did the same whenever he talked about Talbot last summer.

This club is a god damn disaster. Nicholson was considered the beacon of respectability in the organization - lending credibility where there previously was none. Between the CBC interview and his big mouth this week, it’s clear the emperor has no clothes. This team goes nowhere with him at the helm. We’ll need to see another GM hired, fail, and be fired before this out-of-touch dinosaur is gone. What’s the playoff projection now, 2024?

Any guesses what McDavid is saying to himself today?

Here’s my guess:

“Oh boy. This is actually going to get worse here.”

I’m highly doubting any season ticket holders walked away from that town hall feeling there is going to finally be accountability in the organization. Just an indication it’s even worse than they thought yesterday.

This crap is starting to excite me. How dumb can it get? Intriguing.

Guys I looked into it and Rieder scored zero goals for the Oilers in the other years we missed the playoffs too. This goes way deeper than we thought.

Does that mean we have to do something...real bad...to Rieder? Damn guy is just gonna keep cursing this org until he's gone?

Just noticed that Rieder has been playing in north america since 2010. This checks out, that's when this team was supposed to start getting better with 1st overall picks, and it just hasn't happened yet. We finally know why.

I think it’s happening. I can’t imagine the support system in his life will sit idly by while he wastes the best years of what could be an incredible career.

The Oilers will try to blame him. I absolutely will not.

I will just be heartbroken and probably over the Oilers for good.

If the OBC even try to point fingers at Connor should he leave, I will be done with this team for good too. Hell, I'm ready to quit them now unless those @#%!@#'s finally get the boot.

Seriously. That type of damning comment has the potential to kill not only a dressing room but any chance of serviceable players wanting to come here via FA or waiving trade clauses. It’s truly idiotic.

Good for Tobias’ agent coming out and blasting Bob. The comment was garbage, even though we’ve all discussed at length how he hasn’t scored.

You’re part of the problem Bob. In fact, you may be worse than the OBC after that comment. Truly astonishing that a man in such a power seat, and he isn’t new to ‘power’ either from his HC day’s.

Do ya’self and all of us a favour and vamoose.

Didn’t realize his agent spoke out. Here is the statement.

"I am totally astonished and disappointed that the president of an NHL team can make such a callous and reckless statement about a player," Farris told TSN's Ryan Rishaug. "This is unacceptable.”

Tobias wouldn’t comment after last nights game, but apparently Rieder is going to speak about it today.

It was totally uncalled for. I mean okay, sure the guy hasn’t lived up to the expectations we had when he came on board. The same thing can be said about anyone outside of 97, 29 and 93. Seriously. What about Lucic??? He comes in year 1, produces and we make playoffs. Last year? Ppppfftt. He was FORCE FED Minutes with Connor just to “get him out of the funk” bc he hadn’t scored in months. Lucic doesn’t produce, the Oilers don’t make the playoffs. This year, Lucic has been on a milk carton more than the score sheet and we don’t make playoffs. Has Tobias been played on Connor’s wing at all??

For Bob to single out Rieder is 100% ridiculously stupid on his part.

The comment is bad, but it's pretty much par for the course for this organization. Adam has talked many times about coaches and GMs throwing players under the bus and wanting someone who will actually come in and defend the players in the media no matter what.

From MacT and "if you have to ask the question", to Eakins saying the players dont know how to play basic defence, this type of comment is part of a consistent pattern and one of the reasons the team has been junk since Katz got here, and something that Katz could put an end to with one memo.

Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

You’re absolutely right. It’s not a secluded incident, as they’ve been running players out of town for years (can we say decades yet?).

How much are we betting Tobias Rieder goes somewhere in the Pacific next season and absolutely torches the Oilers 5 times next year?

The worst part is it was a totally unnecessary statement. "Tobias came to Edmonton in great shape and working really hard. He had some bad luck at the start of the year and it spiraled". Easy. "We haven't started interviewing GMs yet so we're certainly not at the point where we've decided on what contract offers will look like" Easy. These people simply aren't good at their jobs.

This is probably the best part about Ken Hitchcock. When the players lay eggs against Vegas and St. Louis, he says it was on the staff to get them ready. Theres lots of blame for the players, but he deflected it.

You may not believe a word Hitch because he throws so much earned praise and very little shade towards players and opposition, but I do believe it is a better way to operate as a front office.

The fans and the media shouldn't blindly defend the poor play of players. And behind closed doors, management shouldn't either. But in front of the press and in front of fans, they absolutely should.

A few things about the Tobias comments:

A)If the Oilers actually think they are 10-12 goals away from being a playoff team they are out of touch with any reality.
B) If they believe A then Tobias should be our saviour as they got rid of Chia and MacT because of Tobias lack of 10-12 goals that would "probably make us in the playoffs". If we are in the playoffs Chia would still be here.... obviously 10-12 goals doesn't get us there....
C) He's already speaking for the new GM. We will not be signing him.... okay I guess the new GM won't make that decision
D) Comments like this from Bob's position are terrible optics for any player thinking of signing here, why would you sign here...

Exactly! And no amount of ‘damage control’ will be able to repair that anytime soon. Bad enough it was tough for the Oilers to attract talent as it was. But now there’s this to contend with.

Also lost in this is they expected Toby Rieder to have 15 goals, but I highly doubt they expected Chiasson to have 20. Kind of a wash isn't it?

Simple math on this stuff.

Good stuff that happened = credit to management for smart decisions

Bad stuff that happened = players under-performing and ruining the season

I can't argue with math. The math is always right. Maybe they are getting into analytics.

There are so many amazing things about Burgers statement its hard to know what the best part is.

Underrated I think is how perfectly Oilers it is to start out by saying "Well other teams wanted him to!"

They do this whenever one of their moves blows up in their faces. Which is always.

Like what is the point of this? How do they know this? Is it because they follow Bob Mac or Darren Dregger on Twitter? (reminds me of the screenshot from Oil Change with Tambo doing his highly technical research at capgeek).

Or is it because the players agent told them this and SOP is to urinate themselves and unload the brinks truck?

Or maybe it's all part of Nicholsons brilliant strategy of asking other teams what they would do in his position and blindly following their advice.

Any way you look at it this organization is full of buffoons. I think we can all agree on that.

At least the spotlight is taken off of Bob, nationally, with Eugene Melynk calling Ian Mendes "bush league"... Seems like now's the perfect time to shine the bat signal to have Katz come down and fire the entire front office.

Question 1 for every GM/POHO candidate interview:

1) Would you sign Tody Rieder again next season for any price?

If yes, Nicholson spits in their face and leaves.

Lone survivor of the 10-12 interviews is....*drumroll*....Keith Gretzky!
