Oilers Receive Boost With Signing of Oates

He's the 15th leading scorer in the NHL history and has long been a powerplay magician and faceoff stalwart. The Oilers are sorely lacking in both areas and it is likely with this in mind that Kevin Lowe announced on Monday that his club had signed Adam Oates to a one year contract.

He posted totals of 9-36-45 in 67 games last year with Anaheim. He averaged 18.38 of icetime with just 11 seconds per game on the PK but 4.21 a game on the PP. Four of his nine goals and 20 of his 45 points were scored on the man advantage.

Edmonton's currently 27th in the league at 11.4 % so Oates will almost assuredly improve those numbers.

Oates was 57.8 from the faceoff circle last year which ranked him 5th in the league and just behind former Oiler Todd Marchant. This is another discipline in which the Oilers have been recently dominated with the loss of Marty Reasoner.

His contract slates him to make two million dollars this season and there's no word if the salary is pro-rated though it's likely with nearly 20% of the Oilers season already completed. Oates could also earn an additional $150,000 if Edmonton makes the playoffs.

Oates turned 41 this past August but those worried about his conditioning should know that he's one of the league's long standing fitness nuts.

Here's a look at his career numbers:
